Detailed commentary and analysis by Claire's Notes of 'Remember' by Christina Rossetti

CCEA: Relationships
My poetry videos all have the same structure: I start by putting the poem into its historical and biographical context where this enhances its understanding and give a short summary of the poem itself; I then look at the poem in its entirety, picking out structural features, such as metre (rhythm), any rhyming and patterns in language which the poet uses; I finish by going through the poem on a line-by-line basis, giving definitions of words and offering an interpretation of the poet’s words with justification. Most of the terminology I use (in green) is provided with a definition below, so even if you haven’t come across it before, you should still be able to understand the points I am making.
Please subscribe to Claire's Notes for waffle-free videos covering all aspects of English Language and English Literature GCSE. Detailed analysis of literature texts, language extracts and exam papers and explanations of terminology and grammar.
About me:
I have been an English teacher and private tutor for more than 20 years.
Please note that any literature analysis is highly subjective and may disagree with analysis by another person. All interpretations are valid if they can be justified by reference to the text. This interpretation is my own: it is not exhaustive and there are alternatives!

    Thank you. I just have a suggestion (if I may): I see it better if the poem is read as a whole before the detailed analysis, so that we can make a general idea about the poem before getting into analysing it, because some of the poems are unknown to the viewers here. It's just a suggestion. Thank you again.

    I disagree that the volta occurs at Line 12; it is mid line 8 "Our doom is ever near" - here the tone shifts and Turner stops talking about the fly and moves to discuss the brutal reality of death.

    • @isabelita4654

      This took me a while to figure out, there's almost nothing to write about (i'll cry if this comes up in the exam). This is what I am going to do, I don't know if it's right at all... First stanza is a paragraph: - "they asked me" in media res, personal pronoun doesn't tell us anything, mysterious - "Ultra-super Global Special" excessive, superlatives, the tautology emphasises it and the capitalisation shows how it's important - "and they laughed." - meant to comfort the narrator and the reader into a false sense of trust, but could be interpreted as mocking, makes reader start to think something may be amiss. Next two stanzas is the next paragraph: - "revolving like a flying saucer" showing her giddiness. simile shows sort of alien imagery which is unbelievable and shocking, showing how the whole situation is unreal. - "don't be ashamed // of giving way to your emotions" the enjambment shows how the caller is excited and the words are flowing out quickly as they try to encourage the narrator. - "it isn't every day you hear" the word here makes the sentence indirect and unusual, the equivocation starts to raise suspicion Last three stanzas is the last paragraph: - "We'll give you a moment...' 'Hang on!'" - speech from different people is in the same line and the caesura - interrupts the caller's flow as the narrator starts to realise - "'But the money?' 'We don't deal in money.'" - same line again, the sentences are short and fast paced showing how the illusion starts to deteriorate and the narrator is losing grasp of the fake prize. - "You've had a great experience, right? Exciting? Something you'll remember?" three rhetorical questions in concession, the caller tries to justify their actions which makes the reader question the morality of the situation. Conclusion/concluding idea: "and the line went dead." the narrators expectations and excitement die along with the phone call. People can be gullible and fill in the gaps of what they hear with their wishes.

    • @ClairesNotes
      @ClairesNotes Місяць тому

      A good set of notes - but don't forget that you won't be writing generally about the poem, you'll be expected to answer a specific question, e.g. "How does the poet present the theme of expectation in this poem?" and your PETAL 'Point' will need to address this question directly. BTW - it's 'succession', not 'concession'

    How would you make this poem into 3 petal paragraphs? What would the different points be?

    • @ClairesNotes
      @ClairesNotes Місяць тому

      The points you make will depend upon the question that you have been asked. You write PETAL paragraphs in response to a particular question, e.g. "How does the poet present the theme of expectation in this poem?". The 'P' part of PETAL stands for Point - so each Point will directly answer that question, using key words from the question. Then you will provide Evidence that supports your point. You identify the Technique that the writer has used and then you Analyse the language/Technique to explain how your Evidence supports your Point. Don't forget to then Link back to the question.
